 About Us

In the ATC we do a lot of things like camps, shooting, gliding and lots more but the thing that I liked the most in my

time of being in Air Cadets is the A.T Camp at Crowbourgh in April 2008. I liked the camp because you do not do 1

thing e.g night navigation excercise, shooting, bridge building and an assault cause. So it is a fun, exciting team building

camp and if you get a chance to gop on it, I would advise you to because it is a really fun weekend.

The first time I went gliding, it was a very cold day. I was realy nervous because I am quite scared of heights, so when

it came to my turn I was shaking a lot, and I was already feeling sick befor I even got into the air. as the winch started

moving, I could barely talk, but as we were launched into the air it felt amazing, just like being on a roller coaster. The

views were amazing and i loved every minuite. I was very dissapointed when we landed, and I couldnt wait for the

next time.

I joined the 66 Squadron Air Training Cadets on October 13th 2008 and have wanted to join for a while now. I would

like to join the RAF when i leave school and see if I can be a pilot. Since joining i have been learning about the history

of the ATC, shooting, started to learn abut map reading and have formed some really good friends. When I went on

the rifle range i was able to get 2 keyhole shots(when you get two bullets through the same hole) and I'd never been

shooting befor so I was really pleased with it. I wad able to take part in out local British Legion's Remembrance

Parade and felt proud to be allowed to take part. My Great-uncle was in the RAF and my family tell me that if he was

still with us today he would have been really proud of me. I think the ATC is a good thing to be involved in because

the discipline is good and so are the activities that we take part in.

The best thing about cadets so far was, the first day that I joined. Because I started to learn drill and I liked to meet

new people. I liked to shoot but I wasn't that good at it because I didn't hit the target. But practice makes perfect! I

am looking forward to camping in the summer.

I love flying. When I first went gliding I was terrified. You sit the holding the seat cushion, with a parachute on your

back watching all the planes take off, till your go. While I waited, a mixture a fear and dread ran through me. Yet

when I lifted off, and looked around the sky, all my fear and dread was overwhelmed by amazement. Flying through

the horizon on a Tutor...that is what I call a true memory.

At air cadets we do many things. One fun thing we get to do is go gliding. When you take off in the glider you get

pulled up into the air by a winch. When you are in the air, you can have a good look at the area beneath you.

eventually your instructor will ask you if you want to take control, if you feel ready to, then you will reply correctly

and take control. After a wile the instructor will take back control; they will then take you back to land.

Three of us turned up at the squadron at 08:00 in our blues ready to go gliding at Kenley. Although we could only

hope that we would actually get to glide as the weather was looking terrible. When we arrived we went straight into

the meeting room where four cadets from another squadron were already sitting down talking. At first, not a word

between the two squadrons, only whispers between friends. However after the briefing and all the instructors had

left, we were all sitting at the back while one of the guys from the other squadron was setting up the DVD player.

The movie was turned on, but 5mins in we had started a conversation, soon we were all talking like we had been

friends forever. No one had been paying attention to the movie but instead had been laughing, joking and listening

to music. Then the phones came out...There was at least three different songs being played and my friend was

standing the chair, looking like a fool trying to find a signal. After four hours we were still talking even though three

different movies had been played, one of the instructors came in and told us there was no chance of us flying and that

we should go home; not one of us wanted to do that, but we had to. On the way back, we thought how nice they

were and how we were sort of glad that we didn't go gliding and instead made four new friends. But then it suddenly

occurred to us, after hours of talking we didn't have a clue what any of their names were!

As i approached the door, anxiety and fear went through my mind. I had no idea what it would be like, what we had

to do or who would be there at cadets. I stepped through the door and went into the building, along with my friend

form school. It was not what i expected, the people there were so friendly, and i felt at home. Flight Sergeant talked

to my mum and me in his office and I was good to go. All the fears I had, subsided. It was the best thing I have ever

done and i thoroughly enjoyed it.

Just before i turned 13, i had an assembly at school and it was introducing the Air Training Corps. This was to get

people to join and become members. I then joined as a cadet and I now feel encouraged and independent to work

with other people and to participate within groups and new things that I have not done before. I enjoyed my first time

on an indoor shooting range which was fun. I also enjoyed remembrance day and marching, which I found good to

participate in.

The things I like most about the Air Training Corps are all the staff and the activities that we do. I like the shooting

and Cross Country not to mention the Cadets I meet there too! I get to learn new things that I would not normally

do such as map reading and compass work. I also like to do projects because we all do different things. We wear

both blue and green uniforms, but I prefer greens best of all!
